China currently does not have a dedicated “medical visa”. Foreign nationals entering China for medical purposes should choose from the following options based on their expected treatment duration.
Three Practical Entry Options
Visa-Free Entry (stay up to 30 days)
Citizens of over 50 countries may enter China visa-free with ordinary passports for stays not exceeding 30 days. This is sufficient for outpatient consultations, dental treatments, day surgeries, and short-term follow-up visits.
L-Visa (Tourist Visa)
If your country is not on the visa-free list, or you need more flexibility, the L-visa is a simple and standard choice. Attach a hospital appointment letter when applying to explain your medical purpose.
S2-Visa (preferred for treatment over 30 days)
For chemotherapy cycles, post-surgery rehabilitation, or recovery programs expected to exceed 30 days, apply for an S2-visa before departure. The most important document is an official invitation letter from the receiving hospital in China.
